HIR is a carbon sequestration method that incentivises land managers to regenerate native vegetation by changing their current land management practices, and mitigating existing suppressors, that have prevented native woodlands from regenerating.
Eligible HIR activities include managing the timing and the extent of grazing, managing feral animals and pest plants, and the cessation of mechanical or chemical destruction of native forest regrowth.
An Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) is issued for each tonne of carbon stored (sequestered) by the regenerating forest, and the crediting period spans over 25 years.
Disturbances such as bushfires are required to be managed & reported in accordance with the legislation and method rules.
